Bereavement Leave

Bereavement Leave is covered under Article 11 in our Collective Bargaining Agreement.
I recommend that you contact me first when you have a Bereavement Leave request so I can go over your specific situation and ensure you understand how it will impact you and your pay.

Please read the following information. If you have any questions, please contact me via email, text or phone.

Article 11.09.01
When a death occurs in the immediate family of an employee, the employee shall be granted Bereavement Leave up to seven (7) days, at the employee's option, of which not more than three (3) will be with pay. Such leave will normally commence with the first day following the death or advice of death.

The application of this article is that if you notify the company that you need bereavement leave, the clock starts ticking. The next three (3) days will be paid if they are work days. If they are days off, or any portion are days off, the days off will not become paid days. You may take up to seven (7) consecutive days off from the date of notification at your option. That means you could choose to take less than 7 days if you wish. The maximum number of paid days will be 3 regardless of how many days you choose to take off.

Examples 1:

An employee works Mon-Fri with Sat/Sun off
Notice is given to the company on Mon that Bereavement Leave is required for 7 days.
Tue/Wed/Thu are work days so they are paid Bereavement days. Fri is an unpaid Bereavement day. Sat/Sun are days off and unpaid. Mon is an unpaid Bereavement day.

Example 2:

An employee works Mon-Fri with Sat/Sun off
Notice is given to the company on Fri that Bereavement Leave is required for 7 days.
Sat/Sun are days off and unpaid. Mon is a work day and will be a paid Bereavement day. Tue/Wed/Thu/Fri are unpaid Bereavement days.

Example 3:

An employee is going on vacation and after working their last shift prior to vacation, is notified of a death in their immediate family. The employee calls the company to advise them immediately that they require 7 days Bereavement Leave.
The days off before vacation are unpaid. Vacation is paid time. There are no additional days granted for Bereavement Leave.
